Jessie Wilschek - Canto XXXI

Canto XXXI
Circle: 8 - Central Pit of Malebolge
Sin:
Nimrod - did not finish the Tower of Babel
Ephialtes - warred with the gods
Antaeus - murderer
Punishment:
Nimrod - must babble forever
Ephialtes - his arms are bound forever
Antaeus - must suffer with the other giants even though he belongs in a less evil circle
Retribution:
Nimrod - his babbling goes on forever because his building of the Tower of Babel was interrupted by a confusion of babbling
Ephialtes - since he was not in control when he was living, he must spend eternity being controlled with his arms bound
Sinners: Nimrod, Ephialtes, Briareus, Tityos, Typhan, Antaeus

Dante and Virgil come to the end of Circle 8. They reach the Central Pit of Malebolge. This is where the giants live. This pit is filled with coldness, ice, and strong winds. Dante thinks he sees a city with buildings, but Virgil tells him that those are, in fact, the sinners. Dante meets all of the sinners and hears all of their stories.

Questions:
Number 1: Do you believe it is fair that Antaeus has to suffer in a lower circle than he should just because he is a giant?
Number 2: Explain how the quote below shows that Nimrod is guilty.
lines 76-78: ""His very babbling testifies the wrong/he did on Earth: he is Nimrod, through whose evil/ mankind no longer speaks a common tongue."

(1) I don't thinks its fair because he should be in circle seven, he is suffering more than he should.
(2) He is guilty because he did not finish the tower of babel because everyone started speaking different languages.

1) It is unfair that Antaeus must suffer more than he deserves in a lower circle of Hell, because being born a giant is beyond his control.

1. I don't think it's fair that hes being put in a lower circle just because hes a giant. He shoudl be a few circles up since his sin was killing someone.

2. He's guilty because he didn't finish the tower of babel. This is beacuse during its construction all the builders were cursed and they started to speak a diffrent languages, making it impossible to finish.

1. I do not see Antaeus's punishment as fair. It doesn't make sense to me why he was placed in a lower circle just because he was a giant. The correct punishment should have been given whether he was a giant or not.

2. The quote shows that Nimrod is guilty because if referring to the retribution of the punishment, it says that his babbling in life interrupted the construction of the Tower of Babel. Thus, the quote seems to be saying that his babbling in Hell proves the justification of the punishment.

Canto XXXI:Question 1
It is unfair that Antaeus must suffer deeper in Hell just because he is a giant. He has no control over the way he was born.
